A Sports Injury

You could see the steam rise up from the helmets. The morning dew was still on the fresh cut grass. It was going to be hot again today. It was August. We were in Houston, Texas. Two-a-days in high school football were the things that made stories great. Its the whole idea of walking uphill in 3 feet of snow both ways that our parents used to tell us...actually mine are from Texas and Oklahoma, so I never heard those stories. Anyway, fast forward 13 or so years and the body aint what it used to be...I mean dont get me wrong, when I go to the gym I'll occasionally throw 2 45's on either side of the bench press bar and throw up a few reps of 225 just for old time sakes. How do I know that 3 45's on either side is 315, a 45 and a 25 is 185 and that 1 45 is 135?? Sports and bench press to the junior high and high school athlete go hand in hand. Hell, they used to make shirts for the bench press club that were different colors depending on how much you could press. Very cool stuff.

So, yeah...fast forward a few years and I'm a professional singer that still works out at the gym. I mean, you gotta take pride in the body that you have..its the only one we got! So, I've picked up Racquetball again. You may remember from previous posts that I played it once upon a time in college as my FRA requirement...again, I cant remember what that stands for. Any SU alums reading this, feel free to throw me a bone on that one. Lifetime Fitness here in TX has an amazing facility that I've grown to love and their Racquetball courts are amazing! Court 2 stands there like a glass cube. You see, 2 of its 4 walls are glass. Like, you can see through them...very cool, and it adds an extra challenge when playing. As with pretty much everything I do I play to win. I went up there to meet my buddy Brandon and there was a intruder on our court! Ryan was already there playing with himself...well, on the court, so its ok. So, we decided to have a 3 way. Wow! ...that sounds really naughty, but I promise it wasnt. 3 people can play against each other keeping track of their own points. I'll give it to him, Ryan can serve. He has a mean serve...but we caught on quickly and I managed to win the 1st game 15-11-1 (Brandon is learning). Ok...feeling GREAT! Game 2 I absolutely blow them away 15-7-1 (This time it was Ryan with 1...Go Brandon!!) so, obviously I'm thinking game 3...here we go! ....and of course I dont stop to get water or rest. I'm a warrior in the midst of an epic battle and I'm sure that you could see the steam rising from my head! BUT, I'm also 32 and what some would call a little out of shape. Its funny what the mind thinks and what the body allows. A few points into that third game I sprinted for the ball and felt Brandon hit my left calf with his racket as hard as he possibly could!! I thought, "Why the hell did he just hit me??" ...as I am thrown to the floor in pain and agony I quickly realize that he did not hit my leg but rather my calf muscle decided for me that I was done for the day.

Here I am 2 days later and it feels better but still requires me to walk like a gimp. :o( Hopefully I'll be better by tomorrow so that I can at least walk normal. I'm guessing that I just pulled a muscle and need to rest and relax. I think I might go up to the gym today and sit in the whirlpool spa thing...ahhhhh.
